Books to read and love, all from Maryland alumni

"Ernie Full of Energy" by Tara Iona ´91 is a great way for parents and their children to begin a dialogue about the frustrations involved with learning disorders, particularly ADHD. Ernie´s constant energy and sometimes explosive behavior confuse his parents, but through it all they see their son´s special and wonderful qualities.

University Professor Anil C. Gupta and Haiyan Wang ´95 help business leaders develop robust global strategies by uncovering hidden opportunities—and challenges—presented by the rapidly growing economies of China and India. In "Getting China and India Right," they reveal the secrets to capturing the hearts, minds and wallets of consumers there.

In "Rabbit in the Moon" by Deborah and Joel Shlian ´67, Dr. Lili Quan honors her mother´s dying wish by traveling to China, where she meets her grandfather, who made a remarkable discovery: the secret to long life. This earth-shattering find could become a deadly international game.

In "Darwin´s Race", Brian Ullmann ´92 takes readers on perhaps the most ambitious adventure race ever attempted, pitting 12 hardened climbers against each other and the daunting elements of the world´s deepest unexplored gorge. As the race unfolds and death occurs, people discover the gorge is not as uninhabited as they believed.

"The Pink Locker Society" by Debra Moffitt ´89, presents the story of three best friends who go on a mission at their middle school. Their job: help other girls by answering their questions about anything. The book gives parents a high-quality, non-threatening way to share with their "tweens" information about growing up.

"Windows to a Wider World", by Harland G. Copeland and V. Joseph McAuliffe M.A. ´55, contains biographies of the Payne Fellows and the National 4-H fellows that speak to the service of these dedicated citizens. The book documents one dimension of a successful effort to prepare professional staff for future service.
