Q. When did the University of Maryland begin to admit international students?

A. Our first international student was Pastor A. Cooke of Panama, who entered the Maryland Agricultural College in 1871,

Some of Maryland's earliest international students included Pyon Su from Korea and Ernesto J. Balbin of Cuba.

only 15 years after the college received its charter. The earliest international student of whom we have a photograph is Ernesto J. Balbin of Cuba (far right); this image of Balbin in his cadet’s uniform was taken in 1878. One of our most famous early international students was Pyon Su (right), the first Korean student to graduate from any American college or university. He received his degree from the MAC in June 1891; only four months later, October 22, he was killed in an accident at the College Park railroad crossing. He is buried in a cemetery not far from campus in Beltsville, Md.
