Terrapin success is always a priority for us, whether it is making your lawn the greenest on the block, creating treasures out of trash, pushing your business to the next level or just helping your child ride a bike without training wheels. These resources are meant to see you succeed—on a budget.

Masters At Hand

Home and Garden Hotline

What it offers: With just one click of the mouse, you will have tips from master gardeners at your fingertips—from seasonal schedules of lawn care to an electronic question-and-answer service. You can even send a digital picture of your ailing azalea for the garden doctors to diagnose. For a more personal touch, a master gardener will come to you and your friends for a group instruction session.

What you save: With their help, you’ll never need to hire a gardener again.

Hidden Treasures Terrapin Trader

What it offers: Here’s your chance to own a hydraulic pump or a dry erase board. How about a rotary phone or electric typewriter? You can get all of these things—surplus from the university—for prices well below market value.

What you save: Cars are going for under $1,000, computers between $50 and $125. Plus, the hours—10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays—call for a day off for bargain hunting.

Grease Terps

Bike Shop

What it offers: Honest bike mechanics in the Campus Recreation Center take a few hours every Monday and Friday (5–8 p.m.) to look at broken bicycles and tell you exactly what you need. After you’ve retrieved the necessary parts from a store, you can come back and they demonstrate how to fix the bike yourself (while doing it for you).

What you save: No more worrying if you paid for unnecessary parts or labor. Better yet, next time you can be your kid’s hero and do the repairs on your own.

Starting from Scratch

Small Business Development Center

What it offers: Catering to new, emerging businesses, this center provides free one-on-one counseling for entrepreneurs and small business owners, workshops under $50, a reference library and networking opportunities for new company owners to meet and greet with established and influential people in their industry.

What you save: Businesses often need the most help when they have the least amount of money. This resource allows you to continue taking your business to the next level without breaking the bank.
